We’re excited to share that Northwest Science is part of the BioOne Subscribe to Open (S2O) program — and BioOne has officially reached its sustainability threshold for 2026.
That means the 2026 volumes of participating journals — including Northwest Science — will be published Open Access, immediately and in perpetuity.
What does this mean for NWSA authors?
• Your 2026 articles will be freely available to anyone, anywhere.
• No $1,500 Article Processing Charge (APC) for permanent open access.
• Authors will only pay standard page charges to cover production costs.
This is a major step toward increasing equity in scientific publishing. Traditional open access models often shift high costs onto authors, creating barriers to participation. The S2O model instead leverages library subscriptions to make research freely accessible while avoiding APCs.
As a nonprofit society journal, we’re proud to participate in a model that supports broader dissemination of research across northwestern North America and beyond without increasing financial burden on our authors.
Thank you to the library partners and BioOne for making this possible.
