Artificial Intelligence

Authors may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT or other large language models in collecting and analyzing data and in producing tables and figures based on original data (but not in altering existing illustrations or photographs). However, the authors are fully responsible for content they produce by means of AI. Authors must identify such content, describe how each AI tool was used, report any potential bias from AI tool use, and cite each AI tool name and source, including applicable version and extension numbers. This information should be summarized at the end of the paper in a headed AI statement; detail may be provided in the Methods section as needed. AI tools may not be listed as a coauthor on manuscripts (as per the COPE position statement on Authorship and AI).

Editors and reviewers must protect confidentiality, copyright, and privacy by not uploading any part of a manuscript to an AI tool. Editors and reviewers may not use any AI tool in preparing their written comments.

Excluded from these guidelines are word-processing tools such as spellchecks and reference managers, as these are not AI.
